Day 39: Acropolis, Mars Hill and Gyros...again...

Excellent Walking Tour of Athens...we spent 4 hours wandering through Zeus' Temple, Hadrian's Arch, The Hill called the Acropolis...which has the famous Parthenon...and got to see the Areopagus where Paul preached...but it all started with the changing of the Greek Guards:  I'm not sure Peggy was very impressed?
These guys did have their act together nonetheless...
It's amazing to most Americans that the Greeks let you walk around and get pretty close to many of their national treasures....it was a treat here at the Temple of Zeus

This fallen column hit the dirt in the late 1800s or so...and has remained "in situe"...

Our tour guide, Markos, was pretty funny for his 31 years of age....but he did a nice job with our photo op...

As we climbed up the Acropolis, we passed by a nice view of Mars Hill (the Areopagus)..now just a mound with a plaque...

A view down towards the ancient marketplace called the Agora...
Arriving at the Parthenon..everyone goes nuts for photos...to get one with no other folks in the middle of this crowd was masterful...thank you very much!
 different views...
The new Acroplis Museum, with an exactly sized and paralleled top floor as they wait for the British Museum to return all of the best remnants and artifacts that have been "taken" by them...it could be a long wait from what we've been told....
the requisite photo with my smiling face....

some beautiful statues holding the door to the sacred temple...with Peggy easily doing the job for one of the removed beauties...
Putting a cap on the temple of Zeus from above...
To no one except ourselves, this is a photo of our Hotel with the yellow canopies...that enables us to see the Parthenon from the 8th floor swimming pool...
A Roman Theater still used nearly nightly for performances...
Here's the plaque on Mars Hill if you can read it...
And here's the biblical reference to Paul.... and his ministry here...
Peggy on the top of Mars Hill....like Paul, except he didn't have the blue hat I'm thinking....
This was a beautiful visit and a tour worth taking if ever in Athens...
As we walked back to our hotel, through the Plaka (or old town), we stumbled across this Gyro place that was excellent...
and here's how we knew it was great:)))))  It's fun to stumble upon these jewels....
Relaxing in the 100+ heat later today, watching the Tour de France again, swimming and then watching the US Women hopefully win the World Cup tonight against Japan....  and tomorrow is our last day before departure...let's see what it holds...blessings, Gary

  1. I wonder if the Brits will hold the Greek treasures as security for the new euro refinance. I think it's hard to envision Paul preaching and persuading from that mound--makes one wonder what it looked like when Paul was there.
